Additional cover to the Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance or EHIC

It is not necessary to have an ICS Complete insurance package if you already have the Basic Healthcare Insurance or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which covers your medical costs. However, you may need additional insurance.

You can arrange the following additional insurance covers through Aon:

  • ICS Start+ gives supplementary cover for medical costs and covers liability, personal possessions, accidents, legal aid and extra costs/emergency assistance.
  • ICS Start covers liability, personal possessions, legal aid and extra costs/emergency assistance.

Basic Healthcare Insurance in The Netherlands and EHIC

The Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance is legally required for international students in The Netherlands with a paid internship or who work part time.

Aon Basic Healthcare Insurance

The European Health Insurance Card (or EHIC) is issued free of charge and allows anyone who is insured by or covered by a statutory social security scheme of the EEA countries and Switzerland to receive medical treatment in another member state, if that treatment becomes necessary during their visit (for example, due to illness or an accident), or if they have a chronic pre-existing condition which requires care such as kidney dialysis. How long the card is valid varies according to the issuing country.

Are you no longer legally required to have the Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance?

Should you no longer legally be required to have the Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance, you must send us one of the following documents by e-mail via info@aonstudentinsurance.com:

  • A copy of your employment contract in which they state the end date of your employment.
  • A copy of the statement from City Hall that you are leaving The Netherlands. We will cancel your insurance from the date upon which you officially leave The Netherlands.
  • Send your request to end the Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance and the applicable documents to info@aonstudentinsurance.com.

Should you want to change your current ICS insurance or request a different insurance package, you can cancel your current insurance and apply for a new insurance online.

European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

Where can I use my European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)?

The EHIC is valid within the European Union, Lichtenstein, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Australia. It offers medical care based on the level of cover in the country where the care is needed.
